Showing this Summer: Dollhouse Day at the Movies
Families don’t need more screen time hacks. They need more moments that actually feel like childhood.
There’s something magical about taking your kids to the movies. The oversized seats, the popcorn excitement. The lights dimming just before the story begins.
But for many families, going to the movies no longer feels simple. Ticket prices climb higher every year. The experience often feels rushed, overstimulating, or disconnected from what families with younger children actually need. We kept hearing the same thing from parents at Dollhouse Day events across the Bay Area: “We wish there were more affordable family experiences like this.”
So we decided to build one.
This summer, The Dollhouse Project is launching a new event series designed specifically for families with young children: Dollhouse Day at the Movies — a joyful community movie experience where storytelling, play, and belonging come together.
And we’re starting with a family favorite: Moana.
More Than a Movie
This isn’t just a theater ticket. For $10, families receive:
A private family-friendly screening
A surprise doll giveaway for children
A welcoming environment where costumes, singing, and excitement are encouraged
A community-centered experience designed for families, not just moviegoers
We wanted to create something that felt emotionally generous. Something where parents leave saying: “That was worth way more than $10,” and where children leave feeling: “The movies were made for me.”
Why Representation Still Matters
At The Dollhouse Project, we’ve seen firsthand what happens when children see themselves reflected in toys, stories, and experiences. Their confidence changes, their imagination expands, and their sense of belonging deepens. Films like Moana matter because they allow children to see courage, curiosity, adventure, and culture reflected back at them in powerful ways. Pairing those stories with inclusive play experiences helps extend that emotional connection beyond the theater. The story doesn’t end when the credits roll.
Families Are Craving Shared Experiences
Parents today are balancing more than ever. Between work schedules, rising costs, technology overload, and the pressure to constantly “optimize” childhood, many families are simply looking for meaningful ways to reconnect. Not everything has to be extravagant to feel special. Sometimes the most lasting memories come from singing along in a movie theater next to your child while they hold a doll they can’t stop smiling about. That’s what Dollhouse Day at the Movies is really about: connection, play and community.
